Opinions

My mother wrote to me:
"Did you know Rita Mae Brown is coming to Sacramento? The Bee Book Club is sponsoring her latest Sneaky Pie Brown mystery 'Catch as Cat Can.' She wil be giving a speech that is free to the public on Thursday, March 28 at the Grand Ballroom 1215 J St. . . . She will give a talk and there will be a question and answer session and then she will autograph her new book . . ."
She wants to know if I want to go see Rita Mae Brown with her. If I don't go, then she won't either. I'm quite undecided at the moment. Somebody tell me whether I should bother, please.

P.S. At work they're going to let me edit the Federal section of our book! The Federal section is considered really hard and in order to get promoted you have to prove you're a good enough editor to edit the Federal section. Only one person is allowed to edit the Federal section per year. (And none of you have the slightest idea what I'm talking about, I know. Oh well.)

I don't think she's written anything good since Rubyfruit Jungle, but that's a matter of opinion.

congratulations on the Federal doohickey.

sure, throw your mom a bone and go see Rita Mae try to regain her faded glory. you can probably get a free hot cocoa or book or something out of it :-)

Some of her more recent stuff is readable-though-not-literary light escapist reading, whereas some of her other more recent stuff is completely astoundingly atrocious (ever tried to read Six of One? if not, well, you don't want to!) but as to being outright good . . . yeah, I agree with you.

She did brilliant things in her youth, though. She founded the Radicalesbians and tried to convert the entire feminist movement to lesbianism. She was really cool back then.

Go!

I like the Mrs. Murphy mysteries. Sure, they aren't exactly heavy reading, but they're fun. I did read her autobiography, "Rita Will," a couple years ago. Fascinating stuff. It would be a unique opportunity to meet a rather prominent figure in lesbian history. Even though most of the talk will probably be inane questions about her cat, I say go for it.
