ACK.

A rich female like Sandra Day O'Connor could easily live several decades beyond the age of 75. WHY is she retiring?? She can't possibly not know the effects this is likely to have on the U.S. Who blackmailed her, and what kind of blackmail could be powerful enough to induce this??? What is the explanation for this horror????

Um. She'd been saying for awhile that she wanted to retire while a Republican was in office. I mean, we progressives might like her because she's not as extremist as others, but it's not like she's ever been one of us. Her loyalties are still with the Republicans.

I think Bush will manage to pick someone so evil that even the most Republican of Supreme Court Justices would live to regret having allowed themself to be replaced. Especially if they live to watch their replacement's evilness for several decades.

My fear is that because O'Connor's a woman, he's going to use this as an opportunity to nominate an ultraconservative female judge. And Edith Jones (http://www.texasobserver.org/showArticle.asp?ArticleID=24) has apparently been on his short list for years. She's scary.

So ... I'm not the only one who flipped on the news to an "oh, crap" moment then.

O'Connor reminds me of Arlen Spector. One of those "really bad, until you remember just how likely it is to be worse without them" people.

Yeah, it is truly sad.

I saw it first in [livejournal.com profile] mellowtomysoul's journal, actually, and then confirmed it on Google News. But it was definitely not a good start to my morning.

I think it's time to filibuster until after the next presidential election.
