Stardust at Four Months Old

Stardust was feeling cooperative about posing for pictures this evening, eager to crawl under, into, and over everything in sight. I got twelve pretty good pictures of her within only a few hours!

This week I bought her yet another collar. Her second collar was "cat-safe," which means she couldn't accidentally strangle herself on it, because it automatically unlatched itself whenever it was pulled on. However, this meant that she managed to unlatch it every single day, so every day when I came home from work, we would have to play the "Figure out where Stardust hid her collar this time!" game. Eventually she not only unlatched it but permanently broke the latch so I couldn't put it back on her. This time I deliberately bought her a collar that isn't "cat-safe" (her first one wasn't "cat-safe" either, and she still managed not to strangle herself on it daily). However, she's already managed to take off the new collar by herself once, too.

It's a good thing she's an indoor kitten, because otherwise she'd be on her 50th collar by now, and her license would be permanently lost. I've decided she's a feline escape artist. She looks like she's just engaging in normal feline bathing activities in this picture, but really she's lubricating herself for the purposes of better slipping out of her collar.

She likes to sleep under the bed a lot. Whenever she crawls out from under it, she always sits for a moment right next to it just like this, looking around expectantly, waiting for me to entertain her.

The looking around expectantly is frequently followed by jumping around crazily.

She has a great time playing with the vertical blinds.

She wants to know why I'm following her around with the metal thing that flashes light in her face.

And why won't I let her out into that exciting world out there? Sure, the outside world may be only seven feet long by four feet wide, but that doesn't make it okay to keep a plate of glass between her and it.

It's such a fascinating seven foot by four foot slab of cement out there.

Can't you see I'm bored, human? Play with me!

Yay, things to pounce on! Even the annoying metal flashing thing is down within pouncing reach!

Pouncing is the only true way to feline spiritual advancement.

And the perfectly kitten-sized ledge on the bathroom counter is the ideal place to relax after the day's pouncing is done.

Yes, I'm continually amazed at home much easier it is to grow kittens than it is to grow plants. Every plant I ever tried to grow suffered from failure to thrive; I was lucky if they stayed alive at all, and hoping for them to actually grow larger was definitely too much to ask. But the very first kitten I've ever tried to grow has about tripled in size in less than three months!

Is it just me, or do her paws look HUGE in every picture? Like SCARY big. :)

I don't notice it myself, but someone else said that about some other pictures of her before, so maybe it's true. Gigantic feet do run in my family (mine are size 10 and a half in U.S. women's sizes, which is big enough that the shoe manufacturers don't even make it), so if she has them, she'll fit right in!

Microchipping

Are you sure that you need to keep a collar on her? My own philosophy for [livejournal.com profile] mira_kitty is that I like her naked (prettier and easier to pet unhindered) and that she probably prefers to be naked too (sure sounds like Stardust does!). Mira's an indoor-only cat, and I live alone, and she's not the sort who tries to run outside. So I can pretty much guarantee she'll stay inside. However, as an essential backup, I did get her microchipped. If anyone finds her and takes her to a vet or pound, they oughtta be able to identify her using the chip. Of course this counts on people doing that, which isn't a huge guarantee, but at least it *is* there.

P.S. Love the pix! Keep 'em coming! Stardust is so adorable!

Stardust has been microchipped, but yeah, I have a really hard time imagining that anyone will think to bother taking her somewhere that will check for a chip. And she tries to run outside every single day when I come home from work - she's successfully escaped several times too, although so far she's always been so surprised at having actually succeeded in escaping that she's stopped at the top of the stairs to look around confusedly and try to get her bearings, and I've been able to pick her up there and bring her back in. But I feel better about keeping a license around her neck in case she escapes further one of these days.

I've definitely considered the possibility that I may have to leave it off her eventually, because I know that a lot of long-haired cats develop skin irritation from their collars and start losing their hair around their necks. So far, though, it doesn't seem like she has any skin irritation, it just seems like she's so active all the time that her normal activity jostles it a lot and loosens it. I think the "cat-safe" collar was just plain badly made, and the buckle on the current one seems really shallow and easily loosened as well.

Wow, too bad she's the type who's always trying to run outside. I can quite understand you wanting to keep a collar on her then.

Maybe she'll eventually give up on that that running outside thing. One can only hope.

Must love the Stardust Kitty!

She's absolutely adorable, Gayle! I agree with an earlier poster - keep the pictures coming!
