Housecleaning for the Purpose of Inviting My Girlfriend Over

I do not understand. What is the purpose of having a vacuum cleaner at all, when after running it back and forth over the same four square feet of area rug 25 times, the area rug is still visibly covered with cat hair?

We got one that specifically claimed to be good for pet hair, but it still doesn't do that well on the rugs. (Not that I'm generally allowed to use it.)

Is the "carpet" brush spinning? Sometimes the belt that drives the rotating brush pops off its sprockets, which makes the brush not spin, and thus the cat hair not be dislodged. The good news is that it tends to be just easy enough for a person to open up the vacuum enough to locate the belt and sprocket so that a ordinary person can do it, and just challenging enough so that it really makes said ordinary person feel like a conquering hero of vacuum cleaner repair when they successfully execute the fix. Good luck!
