Stardust in the Fireplace

Me: Why does Stardust do that?
Susan: Because she's your cat.
Me: I don't sit in the fireplace.
Susan: Only because you don't fit.
Me: Oh.

Over the course of my lifetime, I've had 14 cats. Stardust is the only one of them who has taken to wandering into the fireplace. She does it rather regularly. Tonight she sat there for about 10 to 15 minutes, looking around and sniffing everything before casually wandering back out again. Are there other cats who behave this way?

I don't have a fireplace but I'm sure my three cats would sit in it regularly if I did. There's something about cats that just love enclosed, out of the way places.

oh wow that picture of Stardust is so awesome.

Also, my cat at home definitely wanders into the fireplace at times and sniffs around. Which, given her color (a dusty grey with flecks of brownish orange), makes her near invisible.

I think maybe she likes to be inside of places; a fireplace is basically a box with an open front.

Actually? She did, hand to god. Sarah says she must have jumped up there from the kitchen sink or levitated or something. I WISH she did something normal like prowling fireplaces.

I don't currently have a fireplace, but I bet Fei Fei would be in there if I had one. As it is, she likes to sleep in or on the following things:

drawers
backpacks
suitcases
milk crates
cardboard boxes
the mountain of clothing in my closet


i could probably fill my backpack with bricks and knives and she'd still find a way to get comfy on it.
