Well, that was interesting. It took three rebootings and switching my mouse and digital camera around into one another's USB ports and reinstalling the software, but my mouse now works again. I wonder what all that was about.

If it happens again, try actually powering off your system and briefly unplugging in. Ever since ATX power supplies hit the scene a few years ago with Pentium IIs, motherboards still get power when the machine is turned off, and that can cause some things to not be reset. (I learned that the hard way with an embedded NIC, once)
