The Antiwar Protests

So, I think I need to drag myself to the local antiwar thing now. I am not looking forward to it, because it feels like such a social event and I am a good little hermit who intensely dreads all social events. But I should go to this one, yes. Even though I fully expect to be distinctly unenthralled by it.

I don't think it need be a social event. I went and didn't talk to a single person the whole time, unless you count a "thanks", an "excuse me" and a "sorry".

Actually, I did plan to meet with a couple of friends, but everywhere was so crowded, it proved logistically impossible to get together.

Don't believe the media reports about 750,000 demonstrators in London, by the way. I'd be extremely surprised if there were less than a million. In fact, our organizers claimed nearly two million. That may be an exaggeration, but the police have a knack of undercounting. Either way, it was a lot.

likewise i find marches and rallies to be pretty anti-social unless you go with a group of friends or go out of your way to meet people. unless i go with a friend i often go through the whole events without much more than smiling and bumping into strangers.

i don't believe cnn's figure of 750k in london either. i bet over a million.
in seattle i'm not sure what the official figures were -- i've heard between 30,000 - 100,000. i'd say we were near the upper half of that range... at least 50-60k if not more. given that seattle's population is only 6-700k that's not bad at all.

That's very cool, Gayle; I hope you were able to go. I went downtown to a protest on Saturday with a friend. There were about 60 of us. My sign read "Colin: You are a pain in my colon." :)
