The Obligatory "What I Got for My Birthday" Post

Books:
Indian Killer by Sherman Alexie (author recommended by [livejournal.com profile] eve_l_incarnata)
The Wild Silence by Lucy Jane Bledsoe (I previously read her book Working Parts)
Exquisite Corpse by Poppy Z. Brite (recommended by somebody or other around here, I forget who)
Americana by Don DeLillo (recommended by [livejournal.com profile] inkstained, plus I've read other books by him before)
The World According to Garp by John Irving (recommended by [livejournal.com profile] allyscully and others, plus I've read and adore all his other books)
The Golden Notebook by Doris Lessing (I previously read her book Memoirs of a Survivor)
Lies My Teacher Told Me by James W. Loewen (recommended by [livejournal.com profile] transientdyke and others)
One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez (recommended by [livejournal.com profile] chisparoja and about half the population of my friends list, plus I previously read his book News of a Kidnapping)
As Meat Loves Salt by Maria McCann (recommended by [livejournal.com profile] allyscully)
Amadeus by Peter Shaffer (I previously read his play Equus)
CDs:
The House of Tomorrow by the Magnetic Fields (band recommended by [livejournal.com profile] deadinmotion)
Get Ready by New Order (album recommended by [livejournal.com profile] deadinmotion, plus I already owned most of their previous ones)
Black Market Music by Placebo (easily one of my favorite bands, so it's shocking I didn't get around to buying this sooner than I did.)

Excellent presents.

Megan listens to the Magnetic Fields and they have a song called "Abigail, Belle of Kilronan" and it always makes me laugh. I've never heard my name in a song before.

*gasp* *shock* *horror*

You like Placebo?! And the Magnetic Fields?!?! You automatically have amazing taste in music. Have you heard Sleeping with Ghosts yet? I want to know what you thought. My friend Steve (http://www.livejournal.com/~stevieboy) and I have conversations about which is their best album all the time, and I'm curious as to your opinion. Also, you should check out 69 Love Songs (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00000JY1X/qid=1058805103/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_1/002-3195496-2021609?v=glance&s=music&n=507846) by the Magnetic Fields. It's some of the most beautifully understated love music I've ever heard.

HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY! :-D

Oh, Amadeus is better than Equus. I hope you enjoy.

No, I haven't heard Sleeping with Ghosts and, actually, I've never heard anything whatsoever by the Magnetic Fields at all yet, since I haven't yet listened to the CD and I just asked for it on [livejournal.com profile] deadinmotion's recommendation without having heard anything by them first. (He likes both Placebo and the Magnetic Fields, though.)

It will be quite difficult to top Equus in my mind because I loved it so much. I look forward to this.

my vote is with 69 love songs -- it's my favourite album ever.

Amadeus!

And happy (really-late-but-not-half-as-late-as-I-was-last-year) birthday! ::goes back into hiding::
