Car Bomb!

There is a car in my apartment parking lot with no one in it but a strange sound coming from it. The engine is turned off and the lights are turned off, but there's a continuous buzzing noise emanating from the car which shifts gradually back and forth from a low pitch to a high pitch at approximately ten-second intervals. I cannot for the life of me figure out what could be causing such a noise, and this disturbs me and provokes me to imagine that the car may blow up at any moment. I really hope it doesn't, because my car is parked only two spaces away from it and I'd rather not get up tomorrow morning to find that the whole left side of my car has been dented, burned and shattered by flying pieces of an exploding car.

my last buick had a "self-levelling suspension." I don't think it ever leveled anything, but it did have a pump that would sometimes run incessantly even when the car was off, making a similar sort of noise.

That's probably what it is, then. I shall make a mental note to never get a car with a self-levelling suspension.

my car has some strange features like this.

If the air conditioner was running for any length of time while you are driving, the fans will start to run 45 minutes after the car is turned off. This is to blow condensation out of the car so that mold does not grow anywhere.

It supposedly does other things automatically too, but I don't know what these things are.

But you and your car are okay now, right?

Yep, me and my car are both just fine!

Several cars we used to have had cooling fans that stayed on after the car was shut off. Seems like they cycled up and down for a while like you describe here, but it's been many years so I can't say for certain.

Glad it didn't turn out to be a bomb!
