New Computer!

Ten seconds ago I bought myself a new computer. For $682.62. Except I don't even get to actually use it until it gets delivered, which may not be for a week or so, and when it does arrive I'm almost certainly going to have to drive all the way to West Sacramento again to pick it up because UPS is so uncooperative.

However. New computers are good, especially when my existing one was a college graduation gift from my parents in 1998 and boasts an impressive 3.2GB hard drive with Pentium 233 MHz Processor and 32MB RAM.

The new one has a 120GB hard drive. Yes, that's 37 and a half times as big as my existing one. Plus Pentium 4 2.66GHz processor, 512MB RAM, CD-RW Drive and DVD-ROM. ([livejournal.com profile] dragkingvenus, I actually consulted your description of your new computer and purposely tried to find a better one. :p )

Now all I have to do is wait for it to get delivered. And observe the shrinkage of my bank account. But that is okay. I am still pleased.

Weirdly, the most immediate issue that prompted my purchase was, of all things, the fact that my optical mouse isn't working right. And yes, I do know that buying a new computer when it's the mouse that's broken and not the computer is totally nonsensical. But somehow, just the fact of anything computer-related having problems caused me to desire to replace the whole thing. It was ancient anyway, and I've known for a while that I needed to replace it one of these days.

What computer did you get? How did you get such a good deal?

Actually, I'm not sure that's a good deal, since I've only looked at laptops lately. But I think it is.

Do tell!

I think it's a good deal. Um, I spent a lot of time searching http://froogle.google.com - it's remarkably useful, even though it's only in beta and I could name quite a few improvements I wish they'd make to their search functionality. And then I picked a refurbished one, and one that comes without a monitor included (I don't need a new monitor - why do they so often sell monitors packaged with computers?). This is the one I bought. It was only $599.00 before shipping and sales tax, but shipping and sale tax added an extra $83.62.

woah, this is an even BETTER picture of you!! :)

Aww, your computer is going to be better than mine. You can play the cool games I can't!

I second that. The only thing worse than being someone with a slow ass computer is being a gamer with a slow ass computer.

yay for fast computers!

Yes, it was definitely time for you to get a new computer. You made the right choice :p My new laptop is refurbished and it's so shiny. It's the way to go.

you needed a new computer. nothing nonsensical about it.

next quarter you should get a bigger monitor.

[identity profile] queerbychoice.livejournal.com 2003-11-18 09:06 am (UTC)(link)
huh? you know nothing about the size of my current monitor. for all you know it could be ten feet wide!

[identity profile] frankepi.livejournal.com 2003-11-18 09:09 am (UTC)(link)
ahh, but i know that the resolution to which you keep it set, the manufacturer's recommnded resolution, cause you to scroll a lot on page designed for 800x600 or over. if your monitor likes resolutions like 480x6whatever you need a bigger monitor.

[identity profile] queerbychoice.livejournal.com 2003-11-18 10:08 am (UTC)(link)
you have a really really really good memory.

however, it was actually my previous monitor that came with a manufacturer's recommendation to not set it higher than 800x600. i just set it to 640x480 to be "extra safe," and then i got a new monitor about two or three years ago and i just still set it to 640x480 to continue being "extra safe" because this one didn't give a manufacturer's recommendation.

but then i actually broke down six months or so ago and have had it at 800x600 since then.

The new one has a 120GB hard drive. Yes, that's 37 and a half times as big as my existing one. Plus Pentium 4 2.66GHz processor, 512MB RAM...

I canot even comprehend hardware that large. Nice. :)

Does the DVD-ROM mean you might start watching movies?

[identity profile] queerbychoice.livejournal.com 2003-11-18 10:09 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, it means I want to buy a DVD of David Bowie's collected music videos which doesn't come in VHS format. ;-)

You suck :oP Heh. But mine's cheaper. And I plan on buying a DVD burner eventually, so there. Mine won't be delivered until around Thanksgiving, but hopefully someone else will be home and can sign for it for me.
