So, I Guess I Will Eventually Get Around to Making a Ronald Reagan Post Just Like Everybody Else

I have four hours off work this morning! Yesterday the owner of my company came into my office to inform me that he was giving us all the morning off "so you can watch President Reagan's burial." I had immense difficulty suppressing my laughter at the idea that I would actually spend my free time doing that.

Incidentally, Noam Chomsky, who's old enough to remember, says that there hasn't been anywhere near this much fuss over the deaths of any other president he can remember except for Kennedy, and in Kennedy's case of course the reason for the fuss was that he'd been assassinated while still President. I wouldn't know, because the only other president whose death I remember is Nixon, and although I know there wasn't this much fuss over Nixon's death, there could be reasons specific to Nixon for that.

I do wonder exactly how much longer Bush can possibly get away with hiding nearly every trace of his own identity on his own campaign website behind a humongous picture of Reagan. I guess Bush figured out that nobody likes him anymore so the best thing he can do is put on a big grinning Reagan mask and hope nobody recognizes the eyes looking through the eyeholes as being his.

My mom said the same thing about the fuss. She also says that she doesn't really remember everybody loving Reagan this much when he was president, and she voted for him the first time. I read in the paper that the honors being bestowed (like the public veiwing in the Capitol) to him have only been given to nine former presidents, most of him (all, maybe?) died in office. So :P

What does Bush need another campaign site for? Doesn't he have whitehouse.gov?

Excellent comment re: GWB's website. I love the image of him in a Reagan mask. The whole Republican Party seems to be doing that right now.

I hope you appreciated the extra sleep time!

I do seem to recall Nixon being spoken of much better immediately after his death. A lot of "he was a good president, people shouldn't have focused so much on Watergate", which really surprised me. I mean, correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't he the former communist-hunter with the "secret plan to end the war in Vietnam"?

I used to think the Reagan admin's lack of qualms about misrepresenting insidious motivations was the worst we'd ever see. Now I'd happily trade for it. Thanks (I guess!) for steering me to the W site.

Here's a piece you might like, if you haven't seen it:

the daily show did a bit about bush. they showed clips of him introducing himself to the other G8 leaders and observers, and he was (voiced over) saying "hi i'm reagan junior" "hi i'm little reagan" "call me ronnie jr." and stuff.

it's a joke. people flock to reagan like he's the second coming. blech.

You know, this is the first lj post on Reagan that I've read from beginning to end. Have to say I'm a bit bemused by the whole sense of occasion that his death created. Oh, and I love your parting shot.
