Somebody Make the Nazis Go Away, Please

The news reports on the Beslan school siege are very confusing. Some articles are saying there were only two women among the 30+ hostage takers (and others say "at least two, possibly four women" were involved) and that the leader was a man, which appears to contradict the article I cited yesterday. I do not know who is wrong or who is lying. I think it is in the Russian government's best interest for them to be mostly men, because the public might have more sympathy for widows. Certainly it's in the Russian government's best interest for them to have been Arabs, but I think it's become pretty clear at this point that contrary to earlier reports, none of the hostage takers were Arab. Their genders, however, are not so clear to me yet. I guess we'll find out eventually. One hopes.

In other news, there is a new LiveJournal community called queerfiction and I like how it's set up and some of the people in it, so I was feeling very enthusiastic about it. But then I clicked on one of the random people who joined it and discovered she is a lesbian Nazi. A real Nazi, not the "feminazi" kind! And she leaves approving comments in response to horribly disturbing racist posts like this one in the horribly disturbing racist white_racialism community she's a member of. I suppose really this should not affect my enjoyment of the queerfiction community, since she's only one random member and has no authority over it . . . but it does affect my enjoyment, not only of the community but of life in general, just to know that people like that exist. Among lesbians! And they feel free to join general-interest lesbian literature communities that have nothing to do with Naziism! I'm disturbed now. Make the Nazis go away, please.

So to make myself feel better, I went and advertised my prisons/slave plantations icon in 1cons. Unfortunately a racist dirrtysuthrngrl there didn't care for it. Now I remember why I so rarely venture outside my own personal LiveJournal enclave: the world outside of it is a very unpleasant place.

It reminds me of the arch-Catholic libertarian I had an argument with recently.

First on how Socialism sux, because it takes away liberties and enslaves people. When I admitted I was, in fact, concerned by liberties, mentioning a woman's right to choose in the examples, he went absolutely berserk.

If you listen to the conspiracy theorist who at one point drove the shuttles around my college campus at night, Hitler and the entire crew were gay - in fact, you have to be gay to be a Nazi. All those gay people dying in concentration camps were apparently just a clever ruse. ;p

I mean, really, when you think of it, queerness and evil oppressive regimes just go together! See?

I'm able to somewhat come to terms with this person by noting that she is very young - younger in my mind because I can't see someone being born in 1986 as out of middle school, even though I know this is incorrect - and seems like someone I can write off as picking up dangerous identities due to personal instability. I doubt she'll be a Nazi for long, and even while she is I can't see her actually being able to cause much damage. This whole thing is still awfully distressing, though.

No kidding. Among my LJ friends list and the people I know in person, the worst vice I run across is libertarianism. Many libertarian views deeply annoy me, but my infrequent confrontations with the racism, sexism, xenophobia, homophobia, and religious zealotry that are all frighteningly common in the US causes me to realize that even the more extreme libertarians among my friends and acquaintances are far less scary than many people out there. Having any contact with the scarier attitudes found in the US makes me even more determined to avoid dealing with the vast majority of humanity.

That's like how the KKK always says, "We're not racist, and we never were! We're just about white pride." Suuuuure. Nobody's buying. In Confederates in the Attic, there's an interview with Shelby Foote where he still tries to sell the line that even the post-reconstruction KKK was really only about a fear of carpetbaggers, and that racism had little to do with it. Gross.

I miss when LiveJournal was a lot smaller and one could at least count on ninety per cent of the random people you'd come across were at least intelligent, creative, thoughtful, and more than likely NOT EVIL. Now it's the like AOL of blogging. :/

I've looked a bit at some of the racialist groups (they infest some portions of the neo-pagan community) an while they claim to only be promoting "the interests of their own race", they're the same old racism.

The thing that blew me away a few months ago was when I ran into some old-style eugenicists on-line. I thought that that had mostly died out 60 years ago, sadly I was wrong. Googling Prometheus and eugenics should provide you with all manner of disturbing reading.

disinformation seems very widespread around Beslan, which will do nothing for the Russian government's reputation. what i had read in the BBC was that two women entered the school and blew themselves up, killing several men in the process and clearing the way for their male comrades to seize the school.
