Last September, a Category 5 hurricane battered the small island of Cuba with 160-mile-per-hour winds. More than 1.5 million Cubans were evacuated to higher ground ahead of the storm. Although the hurricane destroyed 20,000 houses, no one died. . . .

"Merely sticking people in a stadium is unthinkable" in Cuba, Valdes said. "Shelters all have medical personnel, from the neighborhood. They have family doctors in Cuba, who evacuate together with the neighborhood, and already know, for example, who needs insulin."

They also evacuate animals and veterinarians, TV sets and refrigerators, "so that people aren't reluctant to leave because people might steal their stuff," Valdes observed.

You know, they always tell me how bad Cuba is, and how much better I have it here. But you know, if we would stick to our own business and quit trying to dominate the entire hemisphere... as well as the rest of the world... Cuba would probably be a LOT better off. Cubans even have something many people I do not know...health care. If Cuba can give people universal coverage and evacuate citizens... why cannot we?

Well, if as many people had died there as have died in Hurrican Katrina, it would take some serious repression to prevent the public from find out that even one single death had occurred. If Castro's that good at repressing journalists, all the dictator-wannabes of the world should be begging him for lessons.

well, it isn't really a surprise, that. regardless of whether or not the united states thinks of cuba as some deplorable place where the people are mistreated and everyone's a COMMIE!!!! cuba really isn't such a terrible place, as evidenced here. plus, they have a great deal with venezuela about teaching/oil.

fidel castro isn't the greatest man alive. but at least, when it comes to hurricanes, he keeps his people safe.
