KITTEN!!!!!!
I adopted a kitty!!!!!!
But I don't get to bring her home until Thursday, because she has to have anti-reproductive surgery first.
She is a grey kitty with medium-long hair and greenish-grey eyes that are only slightly more greenish than the grey of her fur. She is about eight or nine weeks old; I guess by Thursday she'll be nine weeks old. She is very very quiet and when placed on my lap she stayed where she was put and did not try to wander off anywhere, although she was wide awake. She had two siblings in the cage with her, a medium-haired beige tabby and a short-haired grey tabby whose stripes were more visible and defined than hers. None of them were as active as some of the kittens in other cages (who were mewing incessantly and climbing the walls of their cages), but all three of them seemed healthy and would bat at each other or follow moving fingers with their eyes. None of the three meowed much at all.
I was rather impressed with the animal shelter. It was the downtown animal shelter, which is much bigger than any of the others around here, and consequently had more animals to choose from (which was good, because I'd already tried several smaller animal shelters and been unable to find any cats that I liked). I had been to the downtown animal shelter before, years ago, when my family adopted cats from there, but it's been reorganized since then - for the better, I think. In exchange for my $65 adoption fee, they gave me not only a kitten and a spaying and leukemia/FIV tests and a veterinary exam and microchipping and vaccinations for distemper, rhinotracheitis, calcivirus, pneumonitis, and rabies (which are technically what the $65 is supposed to cover), but also a free scratching post and a free cat toy and a free bag of kitten food and a free bag of kitten treats and a free cat carrier and a free purple collar and a voucher for free flea medicine and a free tote bag to carry all the papers they gave me in. They basically gave me everything I need to start out with except a litter box and kitty litter. I was not expecting them to give me so much. The scratching post is a really good quality one with a wooden base and fabric and a place to attach a cat toy at the top and everything; it's not just a little dinky cardboard one.
Oh, and there's one other thing they didn't give me that the kitten is going to need right away: a name. At the moment, I have no idea at all of what I'm going to call her. So how about you give me some suggestions? I have only one stipulation: she cannot be named Misty, because when I was a kid I already had a medium-haired grey female cat who was called Misty, and this new medium-haired grey female cat of mine needs to be allowed to develop her own independent identity instead of being asked to follow in Misty's footsteps. So please, suggest every cat name you like except for Misty.

You should name her "YAYYYYAYAYAYAY!KITTY."

It will become obvious to you what your cat should be called.
But I've always thought that a great name for a cat would be Iron Klaus. Irony for short. :-)

I'm assuming you'll post pictures eventually, but OMGPICTURESOFKITTY!!!
I've named two cats, and they ended up "Kitty" and "Henrietta". I'm probably not the best person to ask for names.

What about naming her after a literary hero? Or after a song? You ALSO don't HAVE to name her a girlie name either ya know......I have a girl cat named Mr. Wendell (though I dropped the Mr. after a while simply cuz Wendell is easier). I also had a girl cat named "Daddy" once (heehee). You *KNOW* I'm a pro at cat names, but it's ALWAYS taken a while for their REAL name to finally come to me......I've had a Son, Dolby, Patches, Callie, Sly, Moses, Puff, Rhonda, Baloney, Eyebones, Prince Charles, Princess Di, "F", Daphne, Motorhead (he had the LOUDEST purr EVER and loved pancakes and tofu eggs LOL), Jabberwocky, Vlad, Crusty, and now I've got Ash, Mr. Wendell, Black Betty, Baby Jane, Anton, Cookie, Nipsy, KiKi/Kikoman/DooRay/Dippy (this cat has a million names LOL) sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo, yeah, be prepared for it to change a few times before you settle on one.
I CANT WAIT TO SEE PIX!!!!! CONGRATS ON YER KITTY!!!!!!
(pee ess thats baby anton in my icon!!)

Literature, hmm . . . "Heeere, Pramoedya Ananta Toer!" . . . No, I don't think it quite works. Will have to keep working on it.

Speaking as someone who called the ex-cat, er, White Cat, I don't think I'll be able to contribute constructively to this discussion. But whee, kitten! I notice everyone's been congratulating you. So congrats to the little kitten for a change, for getting to go to what I'm sure will be a good home for her. :)

I don't typically name cats that aren't technically mine, either. Actually, I haven't named any cats all by myself without needing to obtain other people's approval since, well, ever. Suddenly unprecedentedly vast and intimidating levels of freedom in cat-naming are open to me! I hope I'm up to the challenge. Not to mention the numerous other challenges of pet ownership. But she is a very good kitten, so maybe she will try to help me through the challenges.

I am crap at naming pets, but I agree with the above: a lot of the time, you've just got to wait until the cat sort of names itself.

I bet her name will come once you've been able to spend some time with her; sometimes it's really obvious right away, sometimes one needs more time to learn who they are.
my cats (as an adult) were Hanswurst (Hansie), Oscar, Bonnie Rose (called Baby), Pukwudji, Emma, and Duncan, Esme (and fleetingly) their brother Tucker. oddly enough, most of the time the name really fit, and very few were named immediately.

I suggest you name your kitty "Puppy". It'll be fun.
=^..^=
And, wow, what an amazing quantity and quality of kitty loot they gave you!!
I spent quite some time after I adopted my kitty, deeply pondering names for her. I wanted one that would feel right, and would continue to feel right for years. I decided that naming her after a star, to commemorate finding her at a desert retreat named "Starland" (because of the clear starry skies in the desert) would be appropriate. After scouring lists of star names for something that would somehow make a good cat name, I found "Mira" which was a cool variable star, which also sounded a bit like a meow! It's been a good name, and I'm glad I took the time (a few days) to ponder and research and ponder some more.
So, all I can say is cat naming is a deeply personal thing, and can be a fun quest to find just the right name that hits you *that way*. Think about meaningful things to you, things that this kitten makes you think of, things that make you laugh or inspire you, etc.
I had a friend who got a himalayan kitten. She named her "Annapurna", after a mountain in the Himalayans. I always thought it was such a cute name; she called her "Purna" for short. Pretty kitty name.
Another friend back when I was but a tot had a kitten named "Bartholomew". I thought it was such an adorably long name for such a little kitten, plus it had that little "mew" at the end.
My sister named her beautiful Abyssianian cat "Mucha", because she adored the painter Alphonse Mucha.
A couple I knew years ago had two lovely black cats, which they named Tsunami and Typhoon. I thought that was adorable.
Have fun with the naming! Indulge yourself! And congrats again to both of you!
I eagerly look forward to adorable pictures....

(Yes, I know you won't have her until Thursday, but this does not cure my kitty obsession. Now!)
And congrats on the kitten, of course. At the risk of sounding even more weirdly obsessed, they change your life in the funniest, most inconvenient and adorable ways. :)

Don't let anybody tell you you can't train a cat. If you want a cat not to mind being held, for instance, you can at least encourage that trait (by, say, making being held regular, as pleasant as possible, and not equated with being trapped---that last part, to my mind, being the most important: let 'em down at the first sign of wriggliness or other indication of wanting down always, unless it's an emergency, no matter how much you want to hold 'em---makes for a more holdable cat later, I swear).
Sounds like your shelter is a good one, indeed.

I've been having a nice time getting to know Weetabix since I adopted her, I'm sure you and your yet to be named kitty will have a wonderful time getting to know eachother too.
If I had gotten a male cat I would have named him "Chesterfield Davenport I" and called him "Sofa" for short. It's a name you might not mind giving to a female cat, though.
When I was a kid my family had a grey cat named "Rainey" after Ma Rainey, though she also looked a bit like a grey rain cloud.
Do you want to name your cat after a person/character, or do you want to make some sort of reference to her appearance or personality?
