Voices

From now on, I want to always be hoarse during working hours, and regain my full vocal range in the evenings and weekends.

I like how my speaking voice sounds when I'm hoarse, but when I come home I want to be able to sing along with the music playing, and right now I can't even hit Elton John's high notes.

I've been hoarse for about five days now. I liked it at first, when I was at work, but now it's gone on long enough, this is a weekend now and I want it gone.

What happened? Are you sick? Do you have a sore throat?

You know... that's a bit long to be hoarse... I would suggest total vocal rest, but obviously you can't do that at work (or can you?).

Hmmm...

I've been sick all week, it's the same disease. And it's not long for me to be hoarse. In my first year of college I caught some horrible throat diseas that gave me a severely sore throat for the entire first three weeks of December, and then I had no voice at all for the rest of December and the entire month of January. Ever since then my throat and voice have been the first to go in any kind of illness, and the last to heal as well. They got permanently weakened somehow, from that one long illness.

And yes, I do have a mildly sore throat right now too.

Really I've pretty much had total vocal rest the entire time I've been hoarse, because I rarely say anything at work and I have no occasion to say anything at home. It was only when I tried to sing just now that I remembered I'm still hoarse.

UGH!

I can barely not have my voice A DAY much less three weeks. But then, I am a trained singer and I pay a bit more attention to my vocal folds than most would -- in fact, it can make me completely paranoid and convinced I am knocking on heaven's door.

So what is this sickness? Is it like a common cold or something else all together?

And what else are you doing for your throat besides resting it? Are you drinking hot liquids and avoiding orange juice? Taking vitamin C (in pill form or through vegetables)?

Hot and spicy food usually feels really good to the throat when you are sick... but then I remember the chicken and stars soup... nevermind.

Do you have any herbal teas -- especially red teas? (Because they normally have rose hips and vitimin C in them and really soothe the throat.)

Besides chicken and stars, are you eating???

What long illness? Did you tell me about that?

Concerned,
